easter 2015

What’s been going on in the parish Eastertide 2015

It seems ages since I posted any news and it has been! Eastertide 2015 has been a great blessing. Our Holy Week and Easter liturgies as ever were the summit of our corporate liturgical life. Our thanks go to the many people who made them such memorable commemorations of the Lord’s passion, death and resurrection. Above a photo taken during the 6am Easter Vigil. This begins on the local hill, the Barrow, with the blessing of the new Easter flame before processing to church for the traditional ceremonies, it was followed by a fantastic cooked breakfast which helped revive us after the very early start!

Ascension Day was celebrated with a Solemn Eucharist to which we invited other local churches and this was very well supported, thank you. Fr Damian Porter, a good friend of the parish and vicar of Warton, preached and joined the concelebrants and our Area Dean Linda also concelebrated at the Eucharist led us in prayer. We ended the evening with wine and cheese.

Pentecost was a day of very mixed emotions as it marked the final act of worship at our mission church on Westgate. Following a number of attempts to make the church grow, including the efforts of Capt David Thorp latterly, we decided that a decision had to be made. Given the decline in numbers, finance and man-power over the past number of years, the PCC voted to close St Martin’s, a sad and very difficult decision to make. The final Eucharist was well attended by many folk who have helped there over the years and a fitting tribute to the faithful witness and ministry of that place for nearly 25years. St Martin’s continues to be used as a community hall for another 12 months as normal.

Pentecost Day ended on a lighter note as we joined forces with local churches for Songs of Praise in Happy Mount Park organised by Norman Boothroyd, myself and others from Churches Together in Torrisholme and Bare. Over 200 people gathered to sing favourite hymns old and new with Morecambe Bay Brass.

The summer is here it seems and these lots going on in the parish as ever, please see the updates elsewhere on the site for info about concerts and the garden party.

Every blessing,

Fr Damian
